NIACC splits with Southwestern

MARION - The NIACC baseball team and Southwestern split an ICCAC twinbill on Wednesday at the Prospect Meadows Baseball Complex.
NIACC won the first game 11-2 and the Spartans (9-11 overall, 2-4 in the ICCAC) won the second game 11-5.
In the first game, NIACC scored one run in the second inning, six runs in the third inning and two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings.
The Trojans (6-17 overall, 2-4 in the ICCAC) hit four home runs in the contest, including a grand slam in the third inning by Kade Peloquin. Also homering for the Trojans were Adam Berghult, Colin Evers and Brock Goelz.
Berghult's homer was his team-leading fifth of the season. It was the first career home run for Goelz.
NIACC's Brayden Hellum had four hits and scored three runs and Berghult had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs.
Reliever Jacob Crissinger (2-1) gained the win for the Trojans. He relieved starter Jaiden Mollett in the fourth inning and tossed two scoreless frames allowing one hit with no strikeouts and two walks.
Cooper Mollet and Joe Jarecki both pitched an inning and did not allow a run to close out the first game for the Trojans.
In the second game, Southwestern scored all of its runs in the first three innings. The Spartans plated five runs in the first inning, four runs in the second inning and two runs in the third inning.
The Trojans received five innings of scoreless relief from Alex Berreth, who allowed two hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Fritz Meyer did not allow any runs in two innings of work and John Lyman pitched a scoreless frame, as well.
NIACC plated single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and pushed across two runs in the eighth inning.
NIACC's Darcy Barry collected three hits, including his first career home run, with two RBIs. Lincoln Berry had two hits, including a home run, with two RBIs and Hellum had two hits, both doubles.
NIACC returns to action Sunday with a league twinbill against DMACC in Clarion.
