Coaching Authorization/Endorsement
For those interested in obtaining a Coaching Authorization or Coaching Endorsement (K-12 teachers) through the state of Iowa can complete the Coaching Certificate at NIACC to satisfy the Coaching Authorization/Endorsement course requirements. A coaching authorization is for anyone who wants to coach (paid or volunteer) middle school or high school athletics who is not a licensed teacher.
A coaching endorsement is for anyone who wants to coach (paid or volunteer) middle school or high school athletics who is a teacher with a current teaching license.
The NIACC Coaching Certificate is not a coaching authorization or coaching endorsement. The NIACC Coaching Certificate satisfies the course requirements needed to obtain a coaching authorization or coaching endorsement as part of the application process through the state of Iowa.
To obtain your coaching authorization through the state of Iowa you will need to apply through the Bureau of Educational Examiners. For your application you must have a copy of your official transcript (showing completion of course requirements), concussion training certificate, and CPR certificate. More information is included about each of these requirements below under the heading Coaching Authorization Checklist.

Steps to Register for Coaching Classes at NIACC
New students follow steps 1 and 2 listed below. Current students start at step 3 below.

Coaching Authorization Checklist
The following list will help guide you through the coaching authorization process and help you keep track of what you need to complete to become a coach in the state of Iowa.

Complete the core coursework required to obtain a coaching authorization. NIACC offers the following courses that meet these requirements:
1. PEC-110 - Coaching, Ethics, Techniques, & Theories 1 s.h.
2. PEC-115 - Athletic Development and Human Growth 1 s.h.
- OR PSY-121 Developmental Psychology 3 s.h.
- OR PSY-223 Child and Adolescent Psychology 3 s.h.
3. PEC-122 - Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology for Coaching 1 s.h.
- OR BIO-206 Anatomy and Physiology I 4 s.h.
- OR HSC-150 Body Structure and Function 4 s.h.
- OR PEH-144 Human Movement Science 3 s.h.
4. PEC-127 - Care & Prevention of Athletic Injuries 2 s.h.

Applicants must have a current CPR certification through an approved organization and provide verification of their certification card when applying for their coaching authorization through the Bureau of Educational Examiners. NIACC offers one option on campus for students to obtain an Adult CPR/AED certification through the American Heart Association, this certification must be renewed every 2 years. Obtain an official copy of transcripts after core courses are complete (Step #1). Applicants who completed coursework outside of NIACC will need a copy of all transcripts that include the core coursework highlighted in Step #1.

First time applicants through the Bureau of Educational Examiners will also need to complete a background check (part of the online application process). Applicants can start this process before finishing the course requirements for a coaching authorization by starting their online application on the Iowa Department of Education website.
