NIACC 100
The NIACC 100 includes 100 athletes dating back to 1919 that made a significant impact on the athletic history at Mason City Junior College and North Iowa Area Community College.
The 100 were honored at the Trojans Forever program on March 23, 2019.
Mason City Junior College
GEORGE WOLF: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1919-20)
George Wolf was the captain and leading scorer for the first-ever Mason City Junior College men’s basketball team. The men’s basketball team that season marked the beginning of athletics at the college. In the 1919-20 season, MCJC competed in the Mason City City League.
WAYNE WILSON: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1924-25)
Wayne Wilson was the captain of the 1924-25 Mason City Junior College men’s basketball team. MCJC compiled a record of 20-3 playing against other two-year schools and competing in the Mason City City League. MCJC won the city league tournament and won the school’s first-ever trophy.
HENRY HERT: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1937-38)
Henry Hert was the captain of the 1937-38 Mason City Junior College men’s basketball team that claimed the first state championship in school history. The Trojans topped Burlington 45-33 in the state title game. The Trojans were 11-3 in the regular season and won 5 games at the state to finish with a record of 16-3.
ANN CASEY JOHNSTONE: GOLF (1940-41)
Ann Casey Johnstone, who passed away in 2014, was a member of the first golf team at Mason City Junior College in 1940 and earned meet medalist honors in the Trojans first dual meet of the 1941 season. Casey Johnstone played on the LPGA Tour from 1964-69. She won the Iowa State women’s amateur six times and was the state amateur runner-up twice. She was a member of the United States’ Curtis Cup teams in 1958, 1960 and 1962. She was elected into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2016 and is a member of the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Hall of Fame (2004), Iowa Golf Hall of Fame (1990), The Sunday Des Moines Register Hall of Fame (1977) and the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame (1976).
PAT LENNON: FOOTBALL (1957-58)
Pat Lennon was the school’s first-ever all-American in the sport of football. He earned all-American honors as an offensive tackle in 1958. Mason City Junior College was 5-2 in 1958 under coach Bill Moore. The Trojans won their first five games of the 1958 season before dropping their final two contests.
DENNY CHRISTENSEN: MEN’S GOLF (1960)
Denny Christensen was the meet medalist at the 1960 Iowa junior college state tournament and helped guide the Trojans to the state team title. The Trojans also claimed state golf team titles in 1961 and 1962.
BARR CONNELLY: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1960-61)
Barr Connelly helped lead the Mason City Junior College men’s basketball team to the state title game in the 1960-61 season. MCJC fell to Webster City 106-88 in the state championship game. Connelly, who was an honorable mention all-American selection, set a then school record for most points in a single-season with 595.
JOE CAHALAN: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1961-62)
Joe Cahalan was inducted into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2010. Cahalan, who originally attended the University of Iowa, led the nation in scoring at 34.5 points per game (724 points) in the 1961-62 season. Cahalan helped lead the Trojans to the state title in 1962 for the first time since 1938. Cahalan set the single-game school record of 55 points against Waldorf College in the first round of the state tournament. The Trojans averaged 97.2 points per game in 1961-62 and scored at least 100 points eight times.
JERRY DUNBAR: FOOTBALL (1962)
Jerry Dunbar was an honorable mention all-American running back for Mason City Junior College in 1962. Dunbar helped lead the Trojans to a 5-2 record under coach Art Lunblad. Dunbar would later become the school’s head football coach from 1977-85. He was also the school’s head baseball coach from 1982-2001 and athletic director from 1983-2001.
MIKE HESTON: FOOTBALL (1963)
Mike Heston was inducted into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2014. Heston was a first-team all-American for Mason City Junior College in 1963 as the Trojans put together a perfect 7-0 season—the first at the school since 1938. In the 1963 season, the Trojans scored at least 40 points four times. They beat Fort Dodge (40-0), Centerville (42-0), Waldorf (60-7) and Estherville (50-0).
PHIL JOHNSON: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1963-64)
Phil Johnson averaged 26.4 points per game for Mason City Junior College in the 1963-64 season. The 26.4 points per game ranked third in the state. After MCJC, Johnson went on to play for Norm Stewart at the University of Northern Iowa. In the 1965-66 season, Johnson led the Panthers in field-goal percentage by shooting 48.3 percent (100 of 207).
NIACC
TOM ANDERSON: FOOTBALL (1966-67)
Tom Anderson was a first-team all-American end in 1967. The Trojans were 6-3 in 1967 under head coach Rich Koolbeck. The Trojans scored at least 40 points in four games in the 1967 season, including 62 against Estherville and 75 against Norfolk, Neb.
JOHN OERTEL: FOOTBALL/BASKETBALL (1967-68)
John Oertel was a two-sport athlete for the Trojans in 1967-68. He quarterbacked the Trojans to a 6-3 season in 1967. He also was a member of the 1967-68 men’s basketball team 18-8 for then first-year coach Herb Konigsmark. Oertel scored 256 points and grabbed 302 rebounds, which ranks 11th on the school’s single-season rebounding list. Oertel was the women’s basketball coach at NIACC from 1984-2011 with a record of 444-375 and guided the 1993-94 team to a sixth-place finish at the national tournament. Oertel was inducted into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2016.
TONY STEVENS: WRESTLING (1967-69)
Tony Stevens was a two-time all-American for the Trojans at the 1968 and 1969 national tournaments. Stevens placed fourth at 137 pounds in 1968 and was the national runner-up at 130 pounds in 1969. Stevens lost to NDSCS’s Terry Stuehrenberg in the 1969 130-pound national final. Stevens along with Paul Tonn (5th at 123) were the school’s first two all-American wrestlers in 1968.
CHARLES HEENE: WRESTLING (1968-70)
Charles Heene was a two-time all-American for the Trojans in 1969 and 1970 under hall of fame coach Kaye Young. Heene reached the finals at 137 pounds in 1969 only to fall to Eddie Wells of Blue Mountain CC (Oregon) in the title bout. Heene also earned all-American honors with a fifth- place finish in 1970.
JOE HATCHETT: WRESTLING (1969-71)
Joe Hatchett was NIACC’s first-ever national wrestling champion– claiming national crowns at 190 pounds in 1970 and 1971. He helped lead the Trojans to a second-place team finishes in 1970 and 1971. He was selected as the national meet’s most outstanding wrestler in 1971. Hatchett was inducted into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2010.
TOM GARCIA: WRESTLING (1971-72)
Tom Garcia claimed the 1972 NJCAA national wrestling title at 134 pounds by defeating Gary Wilson of Genesee Community College (N.Y.) Garcia was one of four all-Americans on the 1972 team that placed second at the national tournament. Garcia also claimed a NCAA Division II national title at 126 pounds for Northern Iowa in 1974.
JOE CORSO: WRESTLING (1971-73)
Joe Corso was elected into the NIACC Hall of Fame in 2006. Corso was a two-time all-American at NIACC in 1972 and 1973—placing fifth at 118 pounds both seasons. After NIACC, Corso placed third at the NCAA Division I national tournament for Purdue at 126 pounds. He was a member of the 1976 United States Olympic team. He placed third at the World Championships in 1979 and was a 1979 Pan Am Games champion. He was elected into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2004.
TERRY MCKISSICK: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1971-73)
Terry McKissick, who was inducted into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2006, is NIACC’s all-time scoring leader with 1,486 points. McKissick scored 749 points in his freshman season (1971-72) and scored 737 points as a sophomore (1972-73). McKissick was an honorable mention all-American in the 1972-73 season. He is also the school’s career rebounding leader with 804.
DEDRIC DOOLIN: WRESTLING (1971-73)
Dedric Doolin was a member of NIACC’s 1973 wrestling team that claimed the national team title. Doolin was a runner-up at the 1973 national tournament at 126 pounds—falling in the finals to Alfred State University’s Vince Tundo for his lone loss of the season. Doolin (17-1) was one of three NIACC wrestlers to reach the finals at the 1973 national tournament.
DENNIS SHAFFER: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1971-73)
Dennis Shaffer, who was inducted into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2006, ranks 2nd on the NIACC men’s basketball career scoring list. With 1,468 points. He scored 734 points in both of his seasons with the Trojans. Shaffer was a first-team all-American in 1972-73 as he helped lead the Trojans to a 22-7 record and a berth in the regional title game where they fell to Southeastern.
ED HERMAN: WRESTLING (1972-74)
Ed Herman was a member of NIACC’s 1973 national championship wrestling team. Herman placed second at 177 pounds at the 1973 national tournament—falling to Grand Rapids JC’s Bob Ankney in the finals. He was one of three NIACC wrestlers to reach the finals in 1973 along with Bob Fouts (1st at heavyweight) and Dedric Doolin (2nd at 126).
BOB FOUTS: WRESTLING (1972-75)
Bob Fouts was the lone individual national champion on NIACC’s 1973 national championship wrestling team. Fouts topped Willard Bryant of Glouchester, N.Y. 9-7 in the 285-pound national title bout. Fouts was one of five all-Americans on the 1973 national title team. The Trojans won their first national team title with 72.5 points. Fouts placed third at the 1975 national tournament.
MARLA SHUEY: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (1973-75)
Marla Shuey has the distinction of being the first all-American in women’s basketball at NIACC and being a member of the first class inducted into the NIACC athletics hall of fame. Shuey was a first-team all-American in the 1974-75 season as she guided the Lady Trojans to a runner-up finish at the national tournament. Shuey ranks fifth on the school’s career scoring list with 914 points. She is also the school’s career rebounding leader with 519. Shuey was inducted into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2006.
DEB HOUG: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (1974-76)
Deb Houg earned second-team NJCAA all-American honors for the Lady Trojans in the 1975-76 season. Houg helped guide the Lady Trojans to a seventh-place finish at the 1976 national tournament. Houg ranks fourth on the school’s career scoring list with 996 points. She also helped lead the Lady Trojans to a second-place finish at the 1975 national tournament.
TERRI HELGESON: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (1975-77)
Terri Helgeson was a second-team NJCAA all-American in the 1976-77 season. She helped guide the Lady Trojans to a seventh-place finish at the 1976 national tournament and was selected to the all-tournament team. Helegson, who was elected into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2014, ranks third on school’s career scoring list with 1,026 points. She is one of three women’s basketball players with at least 1,000 career points.
MARK STREETER: FOOTBALL (1977)
Mark Streeter was a first-team all-American defensive back in the 1977 season. The Trojans were 5-3 in 1977 under first-year coach Jerry Dunbar. The Trojan defense held Waldorf to 2 points in a 7-2 win and gained shut out Iowa Lakes (6-0).
RON ANGELL: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1976-78)
Ron Angell was a third-team all-American selection for the Trojans in the 1977-78 season. Angell ranks fifth on NIACC’s career scoring list with 1,101 points. Angell scored 480 points during his freshman season and scored 621 points as a sophomore. Angell shot 79.4 percent (151 of 190) from the free-throw line in his career. The Trojans were 40-18 in Angell’s two seasons. Angell was inducted into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2006.
RUEBEN COLE: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1977-79)
Rueben Cole ranks 6th on NIACC’s career scoring list with 1,062 points. Cole scored 416 points in his freshman season and compiled 549 points during his sophomore campaign. Cole was a 2-time all-region selection (honorable mention in 1977-78 and second-team in 1978-79). Cole ranks 4th on the school’s career field goals made list (473) and 6th on the school’s single-season field goals made list (291 in 1978-79).
KATHY KONIGSMARK: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (1977-79)
Kathy Konigsmark scored 890 career points during her basketball career, which is tied for seventh on the school’s career scoring list. Konigsmark helped lead the 1979 team to the NJCAA national tournament. Konigsmark also won the state junior college state singles championship in tennis in the fall of 1978. She defeated teammate Bridget O’Leary 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match. Konigsmark and O’Leary also won the state junior college doubles championship in 1978.\
LYNN CUVELIER: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (1981-83)
Lynn Cuvelier was an honorable mention NJCAA all-American in the 1982-83 season. Cuvelier is tied for 20th on the school’s career scoring list with 680 points. She scored 460 points in the 1982-83 season, which ranks 17th on the school’s single-season scoring list. Cuvelier helped lead the Lady Trojans to the national tournament in 1983. The Lady Trojans were 21-8 in 1982-83 and topped Kirkwood 68-62 in the regional title game.
DOUG LAMPE: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1983-85)
Doug Lampe, who played for Herb Konigsmark and the Trojans from 1983-85, ranks 7th on the school’s career scoring list with 1,051 points. Lampe scored 454 points during his freshman season and compiled 597 points during his sophomore campaign. Lampe ranks 7th on the school’s career field goals made list (427) and is 20th on the career rebounding list (397).
JOAN MILBRANDT: VOLLEYBALL (1985-86)
Joan Milbrandt was a first-team all-NJCAA Region XI selection in 1986 and helped lead the Lady Trojans to the national volleyball tournament for the first time in school history. Coach Jacque Griebel called Milbrandt the team’s No. 1 hitter and No. 1 back-row receiver. “She’s an all-around player,” the coach said. “Volleyball is her sport.”
BO BAIR: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1985-87)
Bo Bair, who played for the Trojans from 1985-87 before transferring to the University of Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference, was inducted into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2014. Bair was a team captain for the Cavaliers in his senior season under coach Terry Holland. Bair is tied for 11th on NIACC’s career rebounding list with 466. He scored 753 points at NIACC, which ranks 35th on the career scoring list.
TRACY HORNER: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL/VOLLEYBALL (1985-87)
Tracy Horner was a first-team all-NJCAA Region XI selection in 1986 and helped lead the Lady Trojans to the national volleyball tournament for the first time in school history. Horner was also a member of the women’s basketball team from 1985-87. She ranks 23rd on the school’s career scoring list with 661 points and is 24th on the school’s career steals list with 115.
JENNIFER CURRIER: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL/SOFTBALL (1986-88)
Jennifer Currier was elected into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2010, was an honorable mention NJCAA all-American selection in the 1987-88 season. Currier ranks second on the school’s career scoring list with 1,057 points. She also ranks eighth on the school’s career 3-point list with 107. She scored 789 points in her sophomore season, which ranks second on the school’s single-season points list. Currier was also a first-team all-region infielder/pitcher in the 1988 softball season.
SHAWN HARPER: FOOTBALL (1987-88)
Shawn Harper played offensive line for the Trojans in 1987-88 under head coach Dick Ramsey. Harper went on to play at Indiana University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the fourth round of the 1992 NFL Draft. He also spent time with the Houston Oilers and Indianapolis Colts. Harper was inducted into the NJCAA football hall of fame in 1995.
BRAD PIPPETT: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1988-90)
Brad Pippett, who was inducted into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2016, ranks 14th on NIACC’s career scoring list with 936 points. In his sophomore season, Pippett scored 662 points, which ranks 6th on the school’s single-season scoring list. After NIACC, Pippett played two years at Iowa State under legendary coach Johnny Orr.
TANK CORNER: FOOTBALL (1989-90)
Tank Corner was a second-team all-American running back for the Trojans in 1990. Corner ranks second on the school’s career rushing list with 2,519 yards. Corner rushed for 1,414 yards in the 1990 season, which ranks third on the school’s single-season career list. He rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown to help lead the Trojans to a 18-15 RC Cola Bowl win over Harper College in 1990 for the school’s first bowl victory.
STACY JETER: FOOTBALL (1990-91)
Stacy Jeter was a first-team all-American receiver for the Trojans in 1991. Jeter is NIACC’s career leader in receiving yards (1,169) and catches (80). He ranks fourth (674 in 1991) and eighth (495 in 1990) on the school’s single-season receiving yards list.
SHAWN KASTELIC: FOOTBALL (1990-91)
Shawn Kastelic is the school’s career passing leader with 2,365 yards. He passed for 1,045 yards in his freshman season in 1990 and tossed for 1,320 yards as a sophomore in 1991. He was a first-team all-region quarterback in both 1990 and 1991. He guided the Trojans to bowl games in 1990 and 1991. The Trojans topped Harper College 18-15 in the 1990 RC Cola Bowl and they dropped a 20-9 decision to Harper College in the 1991 RC Cola Bowl.
ANTWON KIMBROUGH: FOOTBALL (1992-93)
Antwon Kimbrough was a first-team all-American running back in the 1993 season and is the school’s all-time career rushing leader with 2,719 yards. He rushed for 1,655 yards as a sophomore and gained 1,064 yards as a freshman.
KATHERINE HADLEY: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (1992-94)
Katherine Hadley was a first-team NJCAA all-American in the 1993-94 season. Hadley helped lead the Lady Trojans to the national tournament in the 1993-94 season. NIACC topped Kirkwood 65-57 in the 1994 regional title game. Hadley scored 469 points in the 1993-94 season, which is tied for 15th on the school’s single-season scoring list. The Lady Trojans were 28-6 in the 1993-94 season.
MARK CULVER: FOOTBALL (1993-94)
Mark Culver was a first-team all-American offensive lineman in 1994. The Trojans were 7-3 in 1994. He helped pave the way for leading rusher Corey Williams, who gained 745 yards. NIACC quarterback Romon Hodoway threw for 1,060 yards in the 1994 season.
MARTAY JENKINS: FOOTBALL (1993-94)
MarTay Jenkins helped lead the Trojans to a 43-20 win over Harper College in the 1993 RC Cola Bowl by catching a 74-yard touchdown pass from Richard Lowery. Jenkins, who played at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1996-98, was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round of the 1999 NFL Draft. In 2000 with the Arizona Cardinals, Jenkins broke NFL records (kickoff returns in a season, 82) and (kickoff return yards in a season, 2,186). Jenkins was inducted into the UNO hall of fame in 2007 and the NJCAA hall of fame in 2011.
JENNIFER SPENCER: SOFTBALL (1993-94)
Jennifer Spencer is the career leaders in wins and strikeouts for the NIACC softball program. Spencer was 40-12 and 251 strikeouts in her career. She was 12-4 in 1993 with 62 strikeouts and was 28-8 with 189 strikeouts in 1994. She played an integral part of the team’s school-record 21-game winning streak in 1994. Spencer was the first softball player to be inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame in 2016.
PAUL BRUNS: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1993-95)
Paul Bruns was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the 1995 NJCAA Division II national tournament as he helped lead the Trojans to the national title. Bruns, who was elected into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2010, ranks 9th on school’s career scoring list with 1,020 points. He also ranks 5th in career 3-point goals (129), 11th in career rebounds (466), 1st in single-season scoring (797 in 1994-95), 1st in single-season 3-point goals (97 in 1994-95) and 4th in single-season rebounds (352 in 1994-95).
GRANT TOWNSELL: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1993-95)
Grant Townsell made what could be considered the biggest basket in school history. Townsell made the winning basket in the final seconds to give NIACC a 64-63 victory over Grand Rapids (Mich.) CC in the 1995 NJCAA Division II national title game. Townsell scored 525 points in his two-year career with the Trojans but none were bigger than his final basket.
TINA HARDING: VOLLEYBALL (1994-95)
Tina Harding helped lead the NIACC volleyball team to the national tournament in 1994 and 1995. At the national tournament in 1994, Harding led the team with 19 kills as the Lady Trojans went 1-2 in pool play. At nationals in 1995, Harding was second on the team with 21 kills as the Lady Trojans went 1-2 in pool play. Harding went on to play on the first-ever SMU volleyball team, a NCAA Division I school in Dallas, and served as team captain. She is now the head volleyball coach at Grand View University.
MINDY HUNT: VOLLEYBALL (1994-95)
Mindy Hunt is NIACC’s lone NJCAA all-American selection. Hunt was a second-team selection in the 1995 season. Hunt played on a pair of Lady Trojan teams that won NJCAA Region XI titles and qualified for the national tournament.
LISA JIPSON: SOFTBALL (1994-95)
Lisa Jipson was a first-team all-region selection as an outfielder in 1995. Jipson ranks third on the school’s career hit list with 116. Her career batting average of .469 ranks second on the school’s career list and she ranks second on the school’s career stolen base list with 83. She was a member of the 1994 team that won a school-record 21 straight games. The Lady Trojans were 72-23, under coach Tom Dunn, in the 1994 and 1995 seasons.
COREY WILLIAMS: FOOTBALL (1994-95)
Corey Williams was a first-team all-American running back in 1995. Williams ranks third on the school’s career rushing list with 2,410 yards. He rushed for single-season school record 1,665 yards in 1995 and gained 745 yards in 1994.
RYAN PIPPETT: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1994-96)
Ryan Pippett, who was inducted into the NIACC athletics hall of fame in 2016, ranks 4th on NIACC’s career scoring list with 1,150 points. He also ranks 2nd on the school’s career rebounding list with 605. Pippett was a freshman on NIACC’s 1994-95 team that claimed the NJCAA Division II national title under coach Dan Mason.
MARY JO VRBA: VOLLEYBALL/BASKETBALL/SOFTBALL (1994-96)
Mary Jo Vrba was a three-sport athlete for the Lady Trojans from 1994-96. She was a member of the Lady Trojans’ volleyball teams that advanced to the national tournament in 1994 and 1995. She was a NSCA third-team all-American as a utility player in softball in 1996. She is one of 11 players in school history to collect at least 100 career hits. She is the school’s career leader with 13 triples.
CLYDE MCCULLY: MEN’S BASKETBALL (1998-2000)
Clyde McCully, who played at NIACC under Steve Krafcisin from 1998-2000, ranks 8th on NIACC’s career scoring list with 1,033 points. He was a third-team all-American in 1999-2000. McCully scored 395 points as a freshman and 638 as a sophomore. McCully is also the school’s all-time assist leader with 438 and he ranks 4th on the school’s career steals list with 162.
CASEY SPREE: VOLLEYBALL/BASKETBALL/SOFTBALL (1998-2000)
Casey Spree accumulated 766 career kills as a volleyball player in 1998-99, which ranks 2nd on the school’s career list since the 1998 season. She also ranks ninth on the school’s women’s basketball career scoring list with 869 points. She is sixth on the school’s career rebounding list with 461, 11th on the career assist list (167) and seventh on the career steals list (170). She was also a member of the NIACC softball team in 1999.
ROBERT ANDERSON: FOOTBALL (2001-02)
Robert Anderson was a first-team all-American running back in 2002. Anderson ranks fourth on the school’s all-time career rushing list with 1,697 yards. He ranks third on the school’s single-season rushing list with 1,247 yards in 2002.
CLINT SELLERS: FOOTBALL (2003-04)
Clint Sellers is the school’s lone two-time all-American in football. The linebacker was an honorable mention selection in 2003 and earned second-team recognition in 2004. In the 2004 season, the Trojans were 6-3 under first-year coach Dave Gillespie. After NIACC, Sellers went on to play at Eastern Illinois.
MARSHAL YANDA: FOOTBALL (2003-04)
Marshal Yanda was an honorable mention all-American selection as an offensive lineman for the Trojans in 2004 under first-year coach Dave Gillespie. Yanda played two seasons at the University of Iowa and was drafted in the third round (86th overall pick) by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2007 NFL Draft. Yanda won a Super Bowl ring for the Ravens in the 2012 season by topping the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII. Yanda is a six-time Pro Bowl selection (2011-16), two-time first-team all-pro selection (2014, 2015) and three-time second-team all-pro selection (2011, 2012, 2016).
BEN ALFORD: FOOTBALL (2005-06)
Ben Alford was an honorable mention NJCAA all-American quarterback in the 2006 season. Alford passed for 1,506 yards and rushed for 10 touchdowns during his sophomore season. He led NIACC to the MFC West Regional Playoff title and a berth in the Graphic Edge Bowl where the Trojans dropped a 24-6 decision.
ANTON CULLOM: FOOTBALL (2005-06)
Anton Cullom was a first-team all-American defensive back in 2006. He helped lead the Trojans to a berth in the Graphic Edge Bowl where they dropped a 24-6 decision to Grand Rapids CC. The Trojans, who were the MFC West playoff champions, were 7-4 and compiled two shutouts.
DAVAUGHN PERKINS: WRESTLING (2007-08)
DaVaughn Perkins was the 2008 NJCAA national champion at 157 pounds. Perkins, who was 39-5, topped Highline CC’s Marshall Giovanni 9-8 in the national championship match. Perkins was one of three national champions for the Trojans in 2008. Perkins pinned Lincoln CC’s Darren Olsen in 4:51 in his semifinal bout at nationals.
DANNY REED: BASEBALL (2005-06)
Danny Reed was the NIACC baseball program’s first-ever first-team all-American in the 2006 season. The outfielder was also the NJCAA Region XI player of the year in 2006. Reed hit .436 as a sophomore with 79 hits, 63 RBIs, 17 doubles and 60 runs scored. Reed had a career batting average of .415 (2nd best in school history). Reed ranks 8th on career hit list with 134, fourth on career RBI list (110) and 12th on career doubles list (27).
LORENZO BROWN: FOOTBALL (2006-07)
Quarterback Lorenzo Brown was an honorable mention all-American in the 2007 season. Also, Brown was selected as the MFC West co-offensive player of the year. In the 2007 season, Brown passed for a school-record 2,208 yards. He helped lead the Trojans to a 7-4 season, a MFC West Regional playoff victory over Iowa Central (48-47) and a berth in the Graphic Edge Bowl. Brown ranks second on the school’s career passing list with his 2,208 yards.
SIMON COOK: MEN’S SOCCER (2007-08)
Simon Cook was a NJCAA second-team all-American keeper in the 2007 season when the Trojans went 13-5 under then first-year coach Mike Regan. In the 2007 season, the Trojans posted 8 shutouts. Cook was a first-team all-NJCAA Region XI keeper in 2007 and 2008. In the 2008 season, the Trojans were 15-4-2 and advanced to the regional title game before falling to Iowa Western 1-0. In 2008, the Trojans recorded 12 shutouts.
GLENN RHEES: WRESTLING (2007-08)
Glenn Rhees was one of three national champions for the Trojans in the 2007-08 season—the first season of wrestling at the school since the 1975-76 season. Rhees capped off a 26-3 season with a 7-3 win over Neosho County CC’s Jason Green in the 174-pound title bout. The Trojans placed fourth at the 2008 national tournament.
ERIK SMITH: BASEBALL (2007-08)
Erik Smith was a second-team all-American selection as an infielder in the 2008 season. Smith is NIACC’s all-time leader in career batting average (.416). Smith collected 138 career hits, which ranks 5th on school’s career list. He also ranks third on school’s career list with 8 triples. In 2008, Smith hit .469 with 84 hits, 66 RBIs and 6 triples.
MIKE UNWIN: MEN’S SOCCER (2007-08)
Mike Unwin was a two-time all-American for the NIACC men’s soccer team. Unwin was a second-team NJCAA Division I all-American in 2007 and a first-team selection in 2008. Unwin is the school’s all-time leader in goals scored with 58. He scored 27 goals in 2007 and scored 31 goals in 2008. He also ranks fourth on the school’s career assist list with 15. NIACC was 28-9-2 in Unwin’s two seasons. The Trojans advanced to the NJCAA Region XI title game in 2008 where they dropped a 1-0 decision to Iowa Western.
ALBERT WHITE: WRESTLING (2007-08)
Albert White was one of three national champions for the Trojans in the 2007-08 season—the first season of wrestling at the school since the 1975-76 season. White capped off a 31-3 season with a 3-2 win over Colby CC’s TJ Hepburn in the 149-pound title bout. White went on to wrestle at Oklahoma State University.
MARIN THORSON: WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD (2008)
Marin Thorson was NIACC’s first-ever national champion in track and field. Thorson won the 2008 NJCAA Division I women’s discus with a toss of 157 feet, 4 inches. Thorson’s winning toss at the national meet is the still the best toss in school history.
GRAHAM LYNCH: MEN’S SOCCER (2008-09)
Graham Lynch was a NJCAA second-team all-American midfielder for the Trojans in the 2009 season. Lynch scored 17 goals in his two seasons for the Trojans, which is tied for seventh on the school’s career goals scored list. The Trojans were 12-5-2 in 2009 and advanced to the second-round of the regional tournament.
ANNA BUENNEKE: CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD (2010-12)
Anna Buenneke was a 7-time all-American for the NIACC women’s cross country (twice) and track and field teams (5 times). Anna Buenneke won a pair of national titles at the 2011 indoor meet claiming titles in the 3,000 and 5,000. She also placed 2nd in the mile at the 2011 national indoor meet. At the 2011 outdoor national meet, Buenneke placed 2nd in the 10,000 and ran a leg on 4x800 relay team that placed 3rd. In cross country, Buenneke placed 8th at the 2010 national meet and was the national runner-up in 2011. She was also a 2-time NJCAA Region XI cross country champion in 2010 and 2011.
TANESHA EDMOND: WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD (2011-12)
Tanesha Edmond was a 2-time national champion for the NIACC women’s track and field team in 2012. Edmond claimed national titles in the heptathlon and high jump at the 2012 outdoor national meet. Edmond is the school record holder in the 400 hurdles (59.89 seconds), high jump (1.75 meters) and heptathlon (4,755 points).
CHRIS DAVIS: MEN’S BASKETBALL (2011-13)
Chris Davis ranks 11th on NIACC’s career scoring list with 999 points. Davis also ranks third on the school’s career 3-point list with 85 and is second on the career steals list with 185. Davis scored 570 points in the 2012-13 season, which ranks 16th on the school’s all-time single-season list. Davis connected on 85 3-point goals in his sophomore campaign, which is third on school’s single-season list. Davis was a two-time all-region selection, earning first-team honors as a sophomore and second-team honors as a freshman.
TRENT SMITH: MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD (2011-13)
Trent Smith was NIACC’s first male all-American in cross country when he placed 11th at the 2011 national meet in New Mexico. Smith placed 16th at the 2012 national cross country meet. Smith is tied for 9th on the school’s career 8-kilometer list with a time of 25:48. Smith is the indoor track and field school record holder in the 3,000 (8:44.92). Smith died in a car accident on Aug. 9, 2016.
LUCAS BAKKER: BASEBALL (2012-13)
Right-handed pitcher Lucas Bakker is NIACC’s career wins leader with 16. Bakker won 9 games in helping lead the NIACC baseball team to the NJCAA Division II World Series in 2013, the first World Series appearance in school history. Bakker also won 7 games in 2012. Bakker ranks 4th on the school’s career strikeout list with 120 and third on the career ERA list (2.57).
TIM BLACK: BASEBALL (2012-13)
Right-handed pitcher Tim Black helped lead the Trojans to the 2013 NJCAA Region XI title and a trip to the NJCAA Division II World Series. In 2013, Black struck out a World Series record 16 batters in a 2-0 win over Madison College. Black compiled a 1.88 career ERA, which is the best in school history. Black is tied for 7th on school’s career wins list with 10 and ranks 3rd with 132 career strikeouts.
DAVID HUMPHRIES: MEN’S BASKETBALL (2012-14)
David Humphries was a 2-time all-American for the NIACC men’s basketball team. Humphries was a first-team selection in 2013 and third-team selection in 2014. Humphries ranks 3rd on NIACC’s career scoring list with 1,190 points. Humphries ranks 4th on career 3-point list (132), 13th on career rebounding list (460), 13th on career assist list (216) and 9th on career steals list (126).
CHELSEY JACOX: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (2012-14)
Chelsey Jacox was a first-team NJCAA all-American in the 2013-14 season. Jacox helped lead the Lady Trojans to a third-place finish at the 2014 NJCAA Division II national tournament. Jacox is the school’s career scoring leader with 1,182 points. She is also the school’s career assist leader with 306. She scored 833 points in 2013-14, which is the most ever in a single season by a NIACC women’s basketball player.
LATEEKA THOMPSON: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (2012-14)
Lateeka Thompson is eighth on the NIACC women’s basketball career scoring list with 880 points. Thompson ranks 12th on the school’s career rebounding list with 375, 10th on the career steals list with 168 and fifth on the career steals list with 176. Thompson, who was a second-team all-American in her sophomore season, helped lead the Lady Trojans to a third-place finish at the 2014 NJCAA Division II national tournament in 2014.
LEVI FINK: MEN’S GOLF (2013-14)
Levi Fink made history at the 2014 NJCAA Division II national tournament as he became the only golfer in school history to win a national title. Fink won the tournament at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind., with rounds of 77-68-72-70 - 287. By winning the national title, he became the sixth golfer from an Iowa school to win since 1958. Fink won two tournaments (Iowa Central and Iowa Lakes Invites) in the spring of 2014. He placed fourth at the regional tournament to punch his ticket to nationals.
CORNTI RUSH: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (2013-14)
Cortni Rush helped lead the NIACC women’s basketball team to a third-place finish at the NJCAA Division II national tournament in 2014. Rush was a third-team all-American in her lone season with the Lady Trojans before transferring to Drake University where she played three seasons.. She scored 521 points, which ranks 9th on the school’s all-time single-season list. She made 84 3-point goals, which ranks fourth on the school’s single-season list.
SIERRA FORD-WASHINGTON: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (2013-15)
Sierra Ford-Washington earned first-team NJCAA all-American honors in the 2014-15 season becoming the school’s fourth women’s basketball first-team selection. Ford-Washington ranks 10th on the school’s career scoring list with 848 points. She is also 10th on the school’s career steals list with 157. She scored 594 points in her sophomore season, which ranks fifth on the school’s all-time single-season list. She was also a member of the 2014 team that placed third at the national tournament.
HANNAH PALMETER: CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD (2013-15)
Hannah Palmeter was a two-time NJCAA cross country all-American and a two-time NJCAA track and field all-American. Palmeter placed sixth at the 2013 national cross country meet and was third at the 2014 national cross country meet. Palmeter is the school record-holder in the women’s 4-kilometer (14:34) and 5K (17:51). In track and field, Palmeter was third in the 1,500 at the 2014 national outdoor meet and was third in the 1,500 at the 2015 national outdoor meet. Palmeter holds the school record in the indoor mile (5:06.69) and the outdoor 800 (2:15.44) and the outdoor 1,500 (4:37.32). She was awarded the 2015 United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association Midwest women’s track athlete of the year.
YOANSE MEJIAS: WRESTLING (2013-15)
Yoanse Mejias was a 2-time national champion for the Trojans at 157 pounds. Mejias topped Clackamas’ Eleazor DeLuca 4-3 in 2015 and beat Iowa Central’s Richie Lewis 7-3 in 2014. Mejias, who went on to wrestle at Oklahoma University, compiled a career record of 69-6 at NIACC. Mejias and teammate Nosomy Pozo became the 2nd and 3rd Trojans to win 2 national wrestling titles.
NOSOMY POZO: WRESTLING (2013-15)
Nosomy Pozo was a 2-time national champion for the Trojans at 149 pounds. Pozo pinned Iowa Western’s Oscar Ramirez in 6:44 to win in 2015 and topped NEO A&M’s Zack Dobbins by major decision (18-6) in 2014. Pozo, who won a NAIA national title in 2018 at Life University, compiled a career record of 56-9 at NIACC. Pozo and teammate Yoanse Mejias became the 2nd and 3rd Trojans to win 2 national wrestling titles.
IMAD AMENZOU: CROSS COUNTRY (2014-15)
Imad Amenzou was a NJCAA honorable mention all-American at the 2015 national cross country meet in Fort Dodge. Amenzou placed 14th at nationals in an 8-kilometer time of 25:47. Amenzou’s personal best 8K time of 25:12 at the 2015 Arkansas Chile Pepper ranks second on the school’s all-time list.
RELLIE KAPUTIN: WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD (2014-15)
Rellie Kaputin was a 2-time all-American for the NIACC women’s track and field team in 2015. At the 2015 NJCAA Division I national outdoor meet, Kaputin placed second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Kaputin holds 3 indoor school records - long jump (5.79 meters), triple jump (12.22 meters) and high jump (1.70 meters). She also holds 2 indoor school records - long jump (5.91 meters) and triple jump (12.31 meters).
JAKE MARLIN: WRESTLING (2014-15)
The four-time Iowa prep state champion was one of three finalists for the Trojans at the 2015 national tournament held in Des Moines. Marlin, who transferred from the University of Iowa, dropped a 5-2 decision to Iowa Central’s Jason Aflau in the 141-pound title bout. Marlin was 25-6 in the 2014-15 season. NIACC placed third in 2015, the highest finish ever for a Steve Kelly coached team.
ADRINE MONAGI: WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD (2014-15)
Adrine Monagi earned NJCAA all-American honors for the NIACC women’s track and field team with her 2nd-place finish at the 2015 outdoor national meet in the heptathlon. Monagi holds nine NIACC women’s track and field records (six indoor and three outdoor). She is the school record-holder in the indoor 55 (7.37), 60 (7.71), 60 hurdles (9.16), 200 (26.15), 400 (1:00.13) and pentathlon (3,405 points). She is also the school record-holder in the outdoor 100 (12.08), 400 (57.42) and 100 hurdles (14.90).
SHARON TOAKO: WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD (2014-15)
Sharon Toako claimed the NJCAA Division I national javelin title with a toss of 138 feet, 10 inches in 2014. She also earned all-American honors in the javelin with a second-place finish at the 2015 national meet with a school-record toss of 141-0.
SAVANNAH LENTZ: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL/GOLF (2014-16)
Savannah Lentz earned third-team NJCAA all-American honors in the 2015-16 season as she helped guide the Lady Trojans to the 2016 NJCAA Division II national tournament. She became NIACC’s 12th women’s basketball all-American. Lentz is the school’s career 3-point leader with 171. Lentz ranks 16th on school’s career scoring list with 695 points. She also qualified for the NJCAA Division I national golf meet in 2015 and 2016—placing in the top 75 both seasons.
ROBBIE GLENDINNING: BASEBALL (2015-16)
Robbie Glendinning is NIACC’s all-time hit king with 195 career hits in the 2015-16 seasons. Glendinning collected 107 hits as a freshman and pounded out 88 hits as a sophomore. Glendinning, who was a second-team all-American infielder in 2015, helped lead the Trojans to back-to-back World Series appearances. Glendinning is also the school’s career leader in RBIs (141), home runs (33), doubles (42), runs scored (151) and at-bats (500).
SHIQUAN HALL: WRESTLING (2015-16)
Shiquan Hall became NIACC’s 12th national champion in the sport of wrestling when he claimed the 2016 NJCAA 133-pound national title. In the title bout, Hall topped Iowa Central’s Zak Hensley 5-3 in overtime. Hall was 15-4 in his sophomore season. Hall, who compiled a career record of 45-14, earned all-American honors as a freshman with his fourth-place finish at 133 pounds.
MARIO PENA: WRESTLING (2015-17)
Mario Pena reached the finals at 285 pounds at the 2017 national tournament in Council Bluffs. Pena was pinned by Iowa Central’s Thomas Petersen in the title match. Pena was the first NIACC heavyweight since Bob Fouts won a title in 1973 to reach the national finals. Pena also earned all-American honors by placing fourth in 2016. Pena had a career mark of 39-20.
MALIQUE ZIEGLER: BASEBALL (2016)
Outfielder Malique Ziegler, who played for NIACC in 2016, was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 22nd round of the 2016 MLB Draft. Ziegler was an NJCAA Division II first-team all-American in his lone season in a Trojan uniform. In 2016, Ziegler hit .395 (98 hits) with 22 home runs, 70 RBIs, 87 runs scored and stole 36 bases. He was selected as the 2016 ICCAC player of the year. The 87 runs scored ranks 1st on school’s single-season list, the 22 home runs ranks 2nd on school’s single-season list and the 31 stolen bases is also 2nd on school’s single-season list.
WAL KHAT: CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD (2016-17)
Wal Khat was a 2-time national champion for the NIACC men’s track and field team. Khat won the 800-meter run at the 2017 indoor national meet and also was the 2017 outdoor national champion in the 800 - becoming the first male in school history to win track and field national titles. Khat also holds 4 school records on the track (indoor 600, 1:21.66; indoor 800, 1:51.78; outdoor 800, 1:52.00; outdoor 1,500, 3:50.85) and is also holds school record for 8-kilometer cross country race (24:49).
AUSTIN ANDERLY: WRESTLING (2016-18)
Austin Anderly became NIACC’s 13th national wrestling champion when he claimed the 2018 NJCAA 141-pound national title. Anderly topped Lincoln’s Christian Kanzler 3-2 in his title bout. Anderly was 14-2 in his sophomore season with 3 pins and 4 major decisions. Anderly, who had a career record of 28-9, also earned all-American honors with a 5th-place finish in 2017.
BRIAN JACQUES: MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY (2017)
Brian Jacques placed 7th at the 2017 NJCAA Division I national cross country meet in Fort Dodge. The 7th-place finish was the highest finish ever by a NIACC men’s runner. By placing 7th, Jacques became the third NIACC men’s runner to earn all-American cross country honors. Jacques covered the 8K national course in a personal-best time of 25 minutes, 13 seconds, which ranks 3rd on the school’s all-time list.
