NIACC's Nazario, Thomas place 2nd at Luther Open

DECORAH - NIACC's Alyssa Nazario and Destinee Thomas both advanced to the finals in the 235-pound bracket Saturday at the Luther College Open.

Nazario, a freshman from Miami, Fla., and Thomas, a freshman from Fort Myers, Fla., both picked up wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals to advance to the finals, but the two teammates did not square off in the finals.

Nazario (7-1) pinned Buena Vista's Magalie Mogiga in 39 seconds in her first-round match and topped Jamestown's Rayanne Mutchler 11-5 in the semifinals.

Thomas (3-2) pinned Loras College's Izzy Kipp in 42 seconds in her opening-round contest and then stuck Cornell College's Bralyn Wagler in 3:14 in the semifinals.

NIACC's Carly Klein placed seventh at 170 pounds.

Klein (3-4) dropped her opening-round contest to Augustana's Sawyer Graham by technical fall, 10-0.

Klein, a freshman from Cedar Rapids, topped Fontbonne University's Alex Parks by fall in 1:53 in her first consolation round contest. Eureka's Parker Dafnis topped Klein 13-10 in a third-round consolation match.

Klein then pinned Loras College's Isabella Baer in 1:36 in the seventh-place match.

NIACC returns to action Wednesday at home with a dual meet against Ellsworth. Match time in the NIACC recreation center is set for 6 p.m.
