NIACC falls to Iowa Lakes on sophomore night

MASON CITY - The NIACC volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Iowa Lakes on sophomore night in the NIACC gym on Wednesday.
Iowa Lakes won 21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-20.
It was the final home match for NIACC sophomores Tiegan Barkema, Kalayah Kaschub, Kyla Moore, Kaylee Ollendieck, Abby Suiter, Jade Thomas, Ryley Wetlaufer and managers Bekah Smith and Sarah Sickler.
"(Wednesday), we celebrated our sophomores and the legacy they are creating for NIACC volleyball," NIACC coach Chris Brandt said. "We are so proud of the hard work and dedication they have to the game, to the team, and the life they are creating off the court.
"(Wednesday), we battled and came up short. It was not because of a lack of effort. They worked extremely hard as a team."
Barkema led the Trojans with 19 kills, 16 digs and two ace serves. Moore had seven kills, three digs, two blocks and one ace serve.
NIACC's Alyssa Wickersheim had seven kills, nine digs and two ace serves. Wetlaufer had 37 assists, 10 digs, four kills, one ace serve and one block and Ollendieck had 17 digs, three assists, two kills and one ace serve.
NIACC's Jaida Hansen had three blocks, Kennedy Schwiesow had 12 digs, Thomas had 11 digs, Suiter had two kills, two digs and two blocks and Kaschub had four kills and two blocks.
NIACC (10-26 overall, 3-6 in the ICCAC) opens NJCAA Region XI-B tournament play on Saturday. The seventh-seed Trojans face second-seed Kirkwood at 1 p.m. in Cedar Rapids.
"As we end the regular season, we get the opportunity to have a couple more days in the gym before regionals begin this weekend," Brandt said.
