NIACC to add women's soccer in 2017
MASON CITY – The NIACC athletic department will add women's soccer to its list of sports in 2017.
Currently, there are 143 NJCAA women's Division I soccer teams, including seven in the ICCAC. Hawkeye CC, Indian Hills, Iowa Central, Iowa Lakes, Iowa Western, Northeast CC and Scott CC are the seven schools in the conference that field women's soccer teams.
"We are very proud of our history in women's athletics," NIACC athletic director Dan Mason said, "and are excited about the return of women's soccer to our campus.
"In speaking with the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference and athletic directors from our region, it became apparent that this is a great fit for NIACC athletics."
NIACC played women's soccer from 2001-04.
Girls' soccer is a growing sport in the high school levels in Iowa and Minnesota.
Last spring, Iowa had 142 girls' soccer teams and had 131 in 2011.
In Minnesota, 193 girls' teams played soccer compared to 176 in 2006.
