Four NIACC wrestlers still alive at nationals
COUNCIL BLUFFS - NIACC's Austin Anderly advanced to Friday's night's quarterfinals at NJCAA national tournament and three other Trojans remained alive in the consolation bracket.
Anderly, who earned all-American honors as a freshman with a 5th-place finish, faces Northeast Oklahoma's top-ranked Cody Karstetter in the quarterfinals that start at 6:15 p.m. Friday.
Anderly (11-2) stopped Camden's Jason Groff 19-5 in his second-round match Friday morning.
Mark Gonzales (125), Noah Jackson (157) and Jimsher Sidhu (285) all remained alive on the consolation side of the bracket. All three will have consolation matches Friday night as they try to stay alive for all-American honors.
After dropping his first-round match at 125, Gonzales (7-8) picked up a pair of wins in the consolation round. He pinned Hser Eh Pwae (Minnesota West), 1:12, and topped Iowa Central's Kevin Radcliff 8-4.
Jackson (11-9) won his first-round match, dropped his second-round match and stayed alive with a 8-7 win over Spartanburg's Brandon Harris.
Sidhu (12-7) also won his opening round match and then fell in the second round. Sidhu pinned Triton's Christopher Colvin in 3:15 in his consolation match.
NIACC is in 15th place with 17 points heading into Friday's quarterfinal round and third-round consolation round. NE Oklahoma leads with 47.5 points and Iowa Central is in second place with 42.5 points.
