Black claims 165-pound district title, Trojans qualify 8 for nationals
IOWA FALLS - NIACC's Tucker Black claimed the 165-pound NJCAA Central district title with a 10-5 win over Iowa Lakes' Andrew Tate on Sunday.
Black became NIACC's first district champion since Jake Marlin (141) and Nosomy Pozo (149) claimed district crowns in 2015. Since bringing back wrestling in 2008, Black is the 11th NIACC wrestler to win a district title.
It is the second victory this season for Black over Tate. Black topped Tate 11-2 in the dual meet earlier this season.
Black (17-8) received a first-round bye and then topped Iowa Western's Cody Kingery in the semifinals, 10-5.
No. 12 NIACC placed fifth at the district meet with 106 points and qualified eight wrestlers for the national meet Feb. 24-25 in Council Bluffs. Top-ranked Iowa Central was the team champion with 171.5 points.
Besides Black, the Trojans also qualified Brennen Doebel (125), Jamarius Jackson (133), Austin Anderly (141), Colby Winnett (157), Ryan Faught (174), Jaylen Lee (184) and Mario Pena (285).
