CEDAR RAPIDS — NIACC's Sedrak Sheppard and Mario Pena each finished sixth at the Coe College Invitational on Saturday.
Sheppard placed sixth at 197 pounds for the Trojans, earning a pair of wins in the consolation bracket after falling in the quarterfinals. Sheppard fell in his fifth-place match against Grand View's Steven Gregory 11-6.
Meanwhile, Pena – wrestling at 285 pounds – also picked up a pair of consolation wins following a 3-1 loss to Simpson's Colby Vlieger in the quarterfinals. Pena was defeated 3-1 by Cornell College's Chris Lyons in his fifth-place match in overtime.
"We got to see how we're going to compete against good wrestlers," NIACC coach Steve Kelly said. "I thought we competed hard and that's what you want to see at these tournaments against bigger schools."
