STORM LAKE - A total of 11 NIACC wrestlers competed at the Buena Vista Open on Saturday.
Paul Mascarenas won four matches at 125 pounds, placing sixth while Shiquan Hall picked up five wins in the consolation bracket, placing sixth at 141 pounds for the Trojans as both wrestled unattached.
"It was a great day for both of them, especially in an environment like that with great competition and no seedings," NIACC coach Steve Kelly said. "It was rugged."
Former Charles City prep Jake Niichel picked up three wins – two pins and a major decision – while Brady Irvin also had three wins for NIACC as they both wrestled at 149 pounds.
"Both of those guys wrestled great," Kelly said. "They're both unselfish kids and wrestle hard."
Meanwhile, Waldorf Keno Jenkins, a former NIACC wrestler, improved to 16-1 with a third-place finish for the Warriors at 165 pounds.
NIACC returns to action Jan. 9 at the Central College Open in Pella.
Notes: Mascarenas has a career record of 31-16 with 6 falls, 2 technical falls and 5 major decisions ... Hall has a career record of 37-13 with 7 falls, 3 technical falls and 12 major decisions.
