NIACC's Hall moves to 133-pound final
COUNCIL BLUFFS - For the third straight year, NIACC will be represented on championship night at the NJCAA national wrestling tournament.
NIACC's third-ranked Shiquan Hall topped seventh-ranked Eduardo Penha of Northwest Wyoming 5-3 in in the 133-pound semifinals Saturday morning inside the Mid-America Center.
Hall is seeking to become NIACC's 12th individual national champion and fifth in the last three years. Nosomy Pozo and Yoanse Mejias both won back-to-back national titles in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
Hall, who was fourth last year at 133 pounds, faces Iowa Central's second-ranked Zak Hensley in Saturday's title bout. Hensley pinned Ellsworth's Tepra Wright in 1 minute, 19 seconds in his semifinal match Saturday morning.
Hall (14-4) is 1-1 this season against Hensley, who pinned Hall in 6:37 in the North Central district final. Hall topped Hensley 10-5 in a dual meet this season.
In the 157-pound semifinals, Northeast Oklahoma A&M's sixth-ranked Dawaylon Barnes edged NIACC's seventh-ranked Quincy Kalkbrenner, 7-5.
Kalkbrenner (17-7) faces second-ranked TJ Barnes of Muskegon in the 157-pound consolation semifinals.
In the 285-pound semifinals, Iowa Lakes' Guy Henson nipped NIACC's Mario Pena, 3-2.
Pena (21-9) bounced back with a 4-1 win over Middlesex's fifth-ranked Ben Aquilina in the consolation semifinals and will wrestle for third place.
NIACC's Paul Mascarenas, who was sixth a year ago at 125 pounds, picked up consolation wins Saturday morning over Northeast Oklahoma A&M's Logan Terrill (8-2) and Highline's Andrea Tereza (9-0) to advance to the third-place match.
NIACC's Kalkbrenner (17-8) will wrestle for fifth place and Kyler Mathews (8-8) will wrestle for seventh place.
