Boerjan, Alert lead NIACC women at home meet
MASON CITY - Sophomores Kirsten Boerjan and Alyssa Alert both shot career best rounds to lead the NIACC women's golf team at the NIACC Fall Golf Invitational on Thursday at the Mason City Country Club.
Boerjan shot a career-best 80, which was fourth in the individual medalist competion. Alert shot a personal-best round of 83.
Tremendous playing today from Kirsten Boerjan and Alyssa Alert," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "They've been putting a lot of effort into their games over the summer and it showed (Thursday).
"Both of them are playing with a lot of confidence. It was good to see them put 18 good holes together (Thursday)."
Boerjan's previous personal best round was 83 at the Iowa Central Invitational on April 9, 2022. Alert's previous best collegiate round was 86 at the Waldorf University Invitational on Sept. 256, 2021.
The 80 by Boerjan was the lowest score by a NIACC women's golfer since Thea Lunning also carded an 80 at the Hawkeye CC Invitational on April 16, 2021.
DMACC's Ashley Michel was the individual medalist with a round of 73.
NIACC placed fifth with a 356 in its season-opening meet. Simpson College was the women's team champion with a 328 and DMACC was second with a 337.
Also for the Trojans Karissa Hoon shot a 96, Emma Weiner shot a 97 and Sophie Lunning shot a 99.
"It was a good learning experience for our freshman, Karissa Hoon and Emma Weiner (Thursday)," Frenz said. "They both played good in spurts but a couple holes here and there hit them hard.
"Sophie had a couple unfortunuate things happen (Thursday), but I really like how she kept it together."
NIACC returns to action Sept. 17-18 at the Buena Vista Invitational in Storm Lake.
"We're disappointed we didn't place better, but this was a good stepping off point," Frenz said, "now we just need to stay consistent with our leaders and bring the others in line as we adjust to the college game."
Team standings - Simpson College 328, DMACC 337, Iowa Lakes 342, Waldorf University 355, NIACC 356, Iowa Central 373.
