Laabs, Homola lead Lady Trojans, 99-75
CRESTON - Taylor Laabs and Mikayla Homola both set new career highs in scoring as No. 16 NIACC overcame a slow start and downed Southwestern 99-75 on Saturday.
Laabs, a sophomore guard, was 9-of-15 on 3-pointers and finished with 42 points.
Homola, a freshman guard, connected on five 3-pointers and finished with 30.
"We put up 61 points in the second half," Lady Trojans coach Todd Ciochetto told the Globe Gazette. "We started moving the ball and seeing each other."
Laabs' 42 points is tied for third on the NIACC women's single-game scoring list. Jennifer Currier scored 42 points in a game three times in the 1987-88 season and Lynn Cuvelier scored 42 points in a game in the 1982-83 season.
Trudy Peterson holds the single-game scoring record of 51 against Kennedy King College in 2015-16. Chelsey Jacox has the second highest single-game point total of 44 against Iowa Central in the 2013-14 season.
Laabs' previous career high was 31 points against Iowa Western on Nov. 18, 2017. Homola's previous career best was 28 points against DMACC on Jan. 27.
The nine 3-point goals by Laabs ranks tied for seventh on the school's single-game 3-point list with Currier in the 1987-88 season. Currier (1987-88) and Peterson (2015-16) hold the single-game 3-point record with 12.
NIACC (18-5 overall) is 5-2 in the ICCAC after the first round of league play.
The Lady Trojans are tied with DMACC for second place in the league standings. Kirkwood leads the league with a perfect 7-0 mark.
NIACC begins the second round of league play at Southeastern on Feb. 10.
