NIACC's Wirkus earns ICCAC player of week honor
MASON CITY - For the third time this season, the NIACC softball team has a player being named the ICCAC Division II player of the week.
Freshman outfielder Makayla Wirkus was selected along with Iowa Lakes' Kaitlyn DuChateau as the league's top players for the week of March 10-16.
NIACC freshman shortstop Mya Bunkers won the award for the weeks of Feb. 10-16 and March 3-9. It is the 17th time in the Matt Egger era that a NIACC players has earned the league's weekly honor.
Wirkus, who is from Edgar, Wis., played an integral part in the Trojans' eight wins last week. Wirkus was 18 for 29 (.620) with three doubles, three home runs, a triple, 15 RBIs and 14 runs scored.
Wirkus is hitting .362 with 27 RBIs, 33 runs scored, six home runs, six doubles, two triples and three stolen bases.
No. 14 NIACC (15-9) returns to action March 26 in its home opener against Indian Hills (10-12). The doubleheader on the NIACC campus is slated to start at 2 p.m.
The Trojans, who have won eight straight contests, open the ICCAC season March 29 in a twinbill at No. 22 Iowa Central (16-1).
