NIACC's Khat wins regional time trial

MASON CITY - NIACC's Wal Khat won the NJCAA Region XI time trial 5-kilometer race in a time of 16 minutes, 13.7 seconds Saturday on the NIACC campus.

Khat edged Iowa Central's Omer Almog, who placed second in 16:13.9. Khat's time trial time was the fourth fastest 5K men's time in school history.

Iowa Central was the men's team champion with 20 points. NIACC was second with 48 points and Iowa Western was third with 82 points.

Other counting scores for NIACC were freshman Zach Freund (8th in 16:50.1), sophomore Colby Kraninger (12th in 17;03.7), sophomore Jose Aguilera (14th in 17:07.8) and freshman Blake Keller (15th in 17:08.5).

Freund's time of 16:50.1 was the 12th fastest 5K men's time in school history.

Also running for the Trojans were freshman John Kraft (18th in 17:27.3), freshman Samuel Dean (21st in 17:39.9), sophomore Nick Frenz (32nd in 17:57.8), freshman Canyon Kuhlmann (35th in 18:00.4), freshman David Carter (39th in 18:10.1) and sophomore Aaron Hardcastle (60th in 19:54.5).

In the women's race, Iowa Western's Shanieke Watson was the individual champion covering the 5K course in 19:35.4. Iowa Central's Agnes Mansaray was second in 20:32.7

Iowa Central was the women's team champion with 22 points. Iowa Western was second with 49 points and NIACC was third with 93 points.

Sophomore Kendra Schmidt led NIACC with a ninth-place finish in 21:30.9.

Other counting scores for the Lady Trojans were freshman Amy Fullerton (20th in 22:54.5), sophomore Guadalupe Diaz (24th in 23:24.2), freshman Cassandra Bonsall (29th in 24:13.7), sophomore Michaela Foster (32nd in 24:42.3) and freshman Morgan Graham (33rd in 24:47.3),

NIACC returns to action Friday at the Augustana College Twilight Invitational in Sioux Falls, S.D.
