NJCAA REGION XI TOURNAMENTS
The following is a look at the men's national qualifiers and how NIACC teams fared at the regional tournaments since Chris Frenz took over the NIACC golf program in 2007:
2007: Team placed third at regional tournament with a 698. Top finishers - 12. Andrew Cullen 83-87 - 170; 14. Elliot Sheriff 87-85 - 172; 16. Greg Engels 85-89 - 174.
2008: Team place seventh at regional tournament at the Fort Dodge Country Club with a 333-316 - 649. Top finishers - Jason Urdahl 84-77 - 161; Tim Dingeman 82-79 - 161; Greg Engels 81-82 - 163.
2009: Team placed fourth at regional tournament at the Mason City Country Club with a 308-314 - 622. Top finishers - Nate Haaland 76-79 - 155; Steven Wyborny 77-78 - 155.
2010: Team placed sixth at regional tournament at Copper Creek Golf Course in Pleasant Hill with a 317-325 - 642. Top finishers - 11. Max Rohlfsen 74-81 - 155; 13. Kade Jones 75-81 - 156.
2011: NJCAA Region XI champions at the Fort Dodge Country Club with a 324-321 - 645. National qualifying team: 2. Max Rohlfsen 78-79 - 157; Kade Jones 85-77 - 162; Adam Brinkman 84-80 - 164; Brandon Wood 80-86 - 166; Harrison Webb 82-85 - 167.
2012: Team placed fifth at regional tournament at regional tournament at the Fort Dodge Country Club with a 319-315 - 634. Top finishers - T15. Jacob Urdahl 78-78 - 156; T19. Dalton Olson 77-81 - 158; 24. Brandon Wood 79-85 - 164.
2013: National qualifiers: 5. Jacob Urdahl 78-73 - 151 (Urdahl was second among qualifiers not from regional champion Kirkwood); 6. Dalton Olson 74-82 - 152 (Olson was third among the qualifiers not from Kirkwood). Team placed third at regional tournament at Hunters Ridge in Cedar Rapids with a 307-317 - 624.
2014 - National qualifier: 4. Levi Fink 76-77- 153. NIACC placed fourth in the team standings at Lake Panorama wtih a 314-332 - 646.
2015 - National qualifier: 5. Sam Steinwand 75-78 -153. NIACC placed fourth in the team standings with a 330-308 - 638.
2016 - NIACC placed seventh in the team standings with a 669. NIACC finishers: Zach Nicholson 81-79 - 160; Joe Nordquist 83-79 - 162; Chris Staudt 84-80 - 164; Brandon Nordman 86-97 - 183; Sam Steinwand 95-99 - 194.
2017 - NIACC placed sixth in the team standings in 2-day tournament at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames with a 333-322 - 655. NIACC finishers: T19. Anthony Emanuel 84-77 - 161; T21. Joe Nordquist 83-79 - 162; 26. Josh Schaefer 82-82 - 164; T31. Zach Nicholson 84-86 - 170; T31. Devin Koob 86-84 - 170.
2018 - NIACC placed third with a 309-315 - 624 at Lake Panorama Golf Course in Panora to earn a trip to the NJCAA Division II national tournament. NIACC finishers: Josh Schaefer 74-77 - 151; Ben Boerjan 74-77 - 151; Devin Koob 78-77 - 155; Jordan Voves 83-84 - 167; Anthony Emanuel 89-85 - 174.
2019 - NIACC placed fifth in the team standings with a 319-325 - 644 at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames. NIACC finishers: 2. Ben Boerjan 71-77 - 148; Austin Eckenrod 82-78 - 160; Jackson Hamlin 80-88 - 166; Matthew Heinemann 87-84 - 171; Zach Martin 86-86 - 172. Boerjan qualified for the NJCAA Division II national tournament.
2020 - No regional tournament was held due to COVID-19.
2021 - NIACC placed sixth in the team standings with a 334-337-321 - 992 at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside, Iowa. NIACC finishers: 15. JJ Wickman 82-80-81 - 243; T21. Kai Nelles 83-88-78 - 249; T25. Jack Barragy 83-90-78 - 251; 29. Beau Thompson 87-83-84 - 254; 34. John Doherty 86-86-90 - 262.
2022 - NIACC placed 10th in the team standings with a 328-344-329 - 1,001 at the Preserve on the Rathbun Lake Golf Course. NIACC finishers: T25. Bryce Malchow 79-82-81 - 242; T36. Eric Ritter 81-91-81 - 253; 38. Jack Barragy 83-89-82 - 254; T39. Kai Nelles 85-86-85 - 256; 41. Bradley Vaith 89-87-88 - 264.

IMPORTANT DATES IN MCJC/NIACC GOLF HISTORY
1940
First year for golf at Mason City Junior College. The Trojans were 2-1 in dual meets with one meet being rained out. The Trojans also held an intra-team tournament, which was won by Ann Casey, the only female on the team.
1941
The Trojans were 3-3.
1954
Coach: Volney Hansen, who coached the team from 1954-56. The 1954 NIACC golf team was the first team since World War II. No meets were held because no other schools in the area had teams. The team practiced at the Mason City Country Club.
1958
Coach: Ed Chuck. Record: 5-0.
1959
Coach: Zeke Hogeland. Record: 5-0. The Trojans placed second at the state meet.
1959 team members - Garry Lowman, Don Spratt, Tom Ervin, Benny Klug, Mike Kellogg, Tom Penaluna.
1960
Coach: Zeke Hogeland.
Notes: The Trojans won the state championship with a 334. Grand View was second with a 342. Denny Christensen was the individual medalist at the state tournament with a 77. Other counting scores for the Trojans were Larry Wedeking 82, Russ Elliott 87 and Jim Phillips 88.

1961
Coach: Zeke Hogeland. The Trojans won the state championship for the second straight season with a 333 at the Woodside Golf Club in Des Moines. Grand View was second with a 339 and Ellsworth was third with a 347. Gene Parr led the Trojans with a 82. Also for the Trojans, Larry Wedeking shot an 83, Denny Christensen shot an 84 and Ted Bair shot an 84.
The Trojans played in the national tournament in Odessa, Texas.

1962
Coach: Zeke Hogeland. The Trojans won the state championship for the third straight season with a 308 at the Woodside Golf Course in Des Moines. Grand View was second with a 322 and Marshalltown was third with a 346. Runner-up meet medalist Jim Cannella led the Trojans with a 74. Cannella lost a playoff to Marshalltown's Jim Hildebrand. Other counting scores for the Trojans were Gene Parr 75, Ted Bair 77 and Dick Hansen 82.
They placed fourth at the national tournament in Joliet, Ill.
1962 team members - Vaughn Ravlin, Jim Cannella, Gene Parr, Mike Miller, Gus Skarlis, Roger Hoeft, Dick Hansen, Craig Monroe, Jon Tison, Skip Farrell, Jack Roby, Ted Bair.
1963
Coach: Dick Garth. Record: 3-3. The Trojans placed third at the state tournament with a 345. Jack Martin led the Trojans with an 80. Other counting scores for the Trojans were Craig Monroe 82, Mike Hubbard 88 and Terry Friend 95.

1964
Coach: Dick Garth. Record: 2-4. The Trojans placed sixth at the state tournament.
1965
Coach: Dan Cahalan. Record: 0-4-1. The Trojans placed sixth at the state tournament.
1966
Coach: Dan Cahalan. The Trojans placed third at the regional tournament.
1967
Coach: Art Lundblad. Playing as NIACC for the first time, the Trojans played in six meets.
1968
Coach: Rich Koolbeck. The Trojans placed fourth in the state tournament.
1969
Coach: Ned Brandt.
1972-73
Coach: Art Lundblad.
1981
Coach: Larry Mozack. NIACC wins the NJCAA Region XI title with a 477 by one shot over rival Waldorf College at Beaver Hills in Cedar Falls. Scott Lewis led the Trojans with a 114, which was third in the individual medalist competition.
The Trojans placed 18th at the national meet out of 31 teams in Chapel Hill, Tenn. The Trojans shot rounds of 322-312 (634). A team total of 630 was needed to make the cut. Lewis and Tony Bailey made the individual cut. Bailey shot 78-75-79-77—309; and Lewis shot 82-75-83-78 - 318.
1982
Coach: Larry Mozack. The Trojans won the NJCAA Region XI title in Fort Dodge with a 27-hole total of 460.
1984
The Trojans placed second at the NJCAA Region XI tournament.
1985
The Trojans placed second at the NJCAA Region XI tournament.
1986
The Trojans won the NJCAA Region XI tournament.
1987
The Trojans placed second at the NJCAA Region XI tournament.
1988
The Trojans placed second at the NJCAA Region XI tournament.
1989
The Trojans placed second at the NJCAA Region XI tournament.
1991
The Trojans won the the NJCAA Region XI tournament in Okoboji with a 27-hole total of 463. They won the tournament in a 3-hole playoff (56-58) over Iowa Lakes. Jim Kruckenberg shot a 36-38-38 - 112; Sean Vidal shot a 39-34-39 - 112; Shannon Lee shot a 41-41-38 - 120; Kevin Alert shot a 44-41-37 - 122 and Mike Teske shot a 43-39--43 - 125.
1992
The Trojans placed second at the NJCAA Region XI tournament.
1993
The Trojans placed second at the NJCAA Region XI tournament.
1999
The Trojans placed fourth at the regional tournament at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore with a 27-hole score of 495. Tim Gilman tied for fifth with a 79-40—119 to qualify for the national tournament. Other scores were Nate Klemm 80-43—123; Adam Pedersen 82-42— 124; Brian Pearce 84-45—129.
