NIACC men place second at Hawkeye CC Shootout
WATERLOO - The NIACC men's golf team placed second at the Hawkeye CC Redtail Shootout on Thursday with a 297/
Iowa Lakes was the team champion with a 296 at the South Hills Golf Club. Mount Mercy was third with a 301 and Iowa Central was fourth with a 303.
NIACC was led by sophomore Matthew Heinemann with a career-best 37-35 - 72, which was fourth in the individual medalist competition. Heinemann's previous career best was a 77, twice.
"We battled hard (Thursday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "and what a great effort by Matthew Heinemann.
"When we get an effort like that out of our four and five guys, it's great to see."
Other counting scores for the Trojans were Austin Eckenrod with a 34-40 - 74, Jackson Hamlin with a 36-38 - 74 and Zach Martin with a 36-41 - 77.
Also for the Trojans, Beau Thompson shot 39-39 - 78, Peter Stadheim shot 36-42 - 78, Jackson French shot 40-40 - 80 and Charles Lorenz shot 38-43 - 81.
"We were close to winning this, which just proves how much each swing counts," Frenz said. "We are definitely trending in the right direction this fall.
"I can't wait to see how we finish this fall season."
The NIACC men return to action Saturday at the Quad Cup in Boone. The Trojans also play in the Waldorf University Invitational on Sunday in Albert Lea, Minn.
