NIACC baseball team advances with 7-2 win

CLINTON - Sophomore right-hander Spencer Chirpich pitched the the NIACC baseball team into the second round at the NJCAA Region XI tournament Thursday night.
Chirpich went the distance pitching the Trojans to a 7-2 victory over Northeast CC by allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks in nine innings of work.
Second-seed NIACC (36-18-1) faces third-seed Kirkwood at noon on Friday at Ashford University Field in the second round. Top-seed Southeastern plays fifth-seed Ellsworth at 9 a.m. in the other winner's bracket game on Friday.
In Thursday's win over Northeast CC, NIACC scored its seven runs by pounding out 13 hits, including a home run from Joey Werner.
Werner was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Leadoff hitter Shane Kelleher was 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Ben Komonosky and Nate VanKan also added RBIs for the Trojans.
