Judge Grimsley (football, men’s basketball coach) (1923-40)
John Avril Grimsley, fondly known as “Judge”,” holds a distinguished place in the history of Mason City Junior College as its inaugural coach.
From 1923 to 1940, Grimsley served as the esteemed football coach, amassing an impressive record of 80 wins, 28 losses and 8 ties.
His remarkable coaching tenure secured him the second position on the school’s all-time win list, a testament to his enduring impact on the football program.
Beyond the gridiron, Grimsley showcased his coaching acumen on the basketball court, assuming the role of the school’s first-ever basketball coach from 1923 to 1926.
During his tenure, he guided the team to a commendable record of 36 wins and 20 losses, further solidifying his reputation as a multifaceted and influential figure in Mason City Junior College’s athletic legacy.
Grimsley was inducted into the Mason City High School athletics hall of fame in 2016.
